ARTIST STATEMENT

Breathing fresh mountain air, physical contact with the earth, and embracing the spirit of adventure fuels my life, and this love for nature is the foundation for my artistic practice. I want to share my passion for our world and guide others to build their own relationships with mother earth. I reflect my personal relationship with nature through the focus on the artist hand in my final works such as through visual brushstrokes or detailed hand-built forms.

Though my work, I strive to draw attention to the natural world around us and incite curiosity in the viewers. My work often references scientific formats such as herbarium plants to draw on the curiosity and the desire for the acquisition of knowledge that is tied with scientific inquiry. Both science and art are manners through which people can seek understanding of the world. I am interested in the ways through which aesthetics can be used to try these to fields together to attract attention and convey information.

I am skeptical of humanity’s relationship with the environment. We are a part of nature, yet we often place ourselves above it and disregard the inter-connectivity of all species. My choice of materials often walks this line between natural and manufactured such as clay. I do not have the answer to the world’s problems, but I believe that ignorance and disinterest are our biggest threats, so my work provides a starting point for viewers to build their knowledge and their desire to learn about the world around them.
